It’s important to be honest with our loved ones and tell them what they need to hear when they need to hear it. Naturally, when we want someone to do better, we’re honest with them. However, there’s a fine line between honesty and being rude.

Although we may have good intentions, it may not come across like that. Many people give unsolicited advice or make hurtful comments and then claim that they were “only being honest”. In order to avoid coming across that way, we should first think about how important the subject is as well as reflect on why we’re telling them.

Are we telling them so they can create positive change? Or do we only want to make them feel bad? Is it important to tell them? Or is it something trivial that simply bothers you?

Another important question to ask is whether you are the right person to tell them. You don’t always have to be the one to let them know in order to be a good friend or family member. Sometimes, having someone in a better position than you or who knows how to better approach that person is the best for everyone.
