How Long Should You Meditate?
As I encounter more beginners starting meditation the question has come up quite a bit – how long should I be meditating for? Let’s explore some of the nuances here.
I’m going to draw a lot of parallels to working out, because I think it maps nicely onto how one can think about meditation. Let’s start by asking what is the point of meditating? Generally, the goal is to clear our mental palate, relax, and become more grounded.
So one of the first considerations is what amount is working for you to achieve that goal? If 5 minutes is helpful and 20 is unbearable, then five minutes is completely acceptable. Use what is working for you to your advantage instead of some arbitrary amount of time.
