Toxic Positivity – What is it and how to avoid it
More and more lately I’m seeing talk of toxic positivity. Here we’ll cover what toxic positivity is and how to avoid spreading it. It’s a bit of insurance against unintentionally using what you think might normally be useful in being optimistic, counterproductively.
What is Toxic Positivity?
I’ve seen quite a few definitions floated around so mine may differ slightly from others, but at the core toxic positivity rejects painful emotions, trying to force positive ones over top of them.
Reflection Questions:
1. Think of a time when you experienced toxic positivity. How could you (or them) have approached the situation more empathetically?
2. Do you usually listen to solve or to connect? How could you move more toward connecting before solving?
3. What relationship do you have with painful emotions? How can you be more accepting of them?
