Metacognition is an extremely valuable skill when put into practice. For example, if you hate going to class, examine why. Is it because you don’t like learning? Or is it because you feel overwhelmed being around lots of people? From this, you might realize that being physically present in a classroom doesn’t work for you and you prefer online classes in order to stay focused. Understanding where your dislike for class came from helped make a more effective choice, which will ultimately lead to increased happiness.
You don’t have to be great at metacognition straight away, but start putting it into practice by meditating, journaling, taking a personality test, reflecting, and whatever other method helps you analyze your thoughts.
The idea is learning about yourself, which not only results in positive change and effective choices, but also self-compassion and happiness.
